Collapsed, this garland birth announcement takes the shape of a flower; expanded, the laser-cut flower becomes 820 feet of muliti-colored fanfare welcoming Florian — the blooming one — into this world. The final piece was cut into over 200 pieces of varying lengths leaving plenty of leftovers for future birthdays.

Project Description

Florian's Birthday Garland 120-metre long garland, divided up and sent as birth announcement cards. When collapsed, the garland forms the shape of a flower (Florian means "the blooming one"). Florian's new friends and acquaintances will be connected to each other by the pieces of his banner. Each piece is numbered and registered. The sent garland pieces vary from 50 cm to 120 cm. Fortunately, Florian has plenty of metres left for his future birthdays. By means of split-colour printing, all of the colours are printed in one go and there is a colour gradient at the 50 metre mark.

Production Lesson(s)

The design needed to remain affordable, which is why the envelope has been printed on the same sheet as the banner parts. By using laser technology we were able to customise all perforations. You will often see this way of print layout in my work. The construction of the banner is very important, and the use of laser aids the process considerably.”
