Project Description

This nationally distributed sex resource for queer women is a playful, cheeky take on the often dry, visually unstimulating sexual health information brochure. Since the resource is meant for a range of people who identify in different ways, it was important not to alienate any specific group. As a result, the design focuses mostly on objects instead of people, which allowed for bold colours and unique illustrations—a nice counterpoint to the sometimes very serious and dense content. The heart motif lent itself perfectly to embossment on the cover, and worked well as a recurring visual element throughout.

Production Lesson(s)

One challenge was to design the resource in a way that would accommodate both an english and a french version (french translations being up to 30% longer) while maintaining the same page count and general layout for the two booklets. Flexible top and bottom margins, and a body typeface that wasn't too horsey at a larger size and was still very legible at a smaller size were important (and helpful) factors. ”
