In-house with printing block

To make these self-promotional New Year’s cards Studio 1500 ordered a laser-etched woodblock and printed the cards in-house. Then they finished off the concept with a sharpie. The woodblock printing combined with the permanent marker “correction” gives these cards a handmade look and allows the designers to get their hands dirty.

Project Description

This was a mailer sent out to select clients and colleagues for New Year's. It's something we've done for the past three years—simple postcards that work only with typography (the numerals in the new year and nothing else) and trying as hard as possible to handle the production ourselves. We do these for fun, and to reconnect with the process of making things by hand. The past two years, we letter pressed cards at the San Francisco Center for the Book. This year, we ordered a printing block from EtchPop and handled the printing ourselves, with Speedball inks and rollers. We then finished the card, and the idea behind it, with Sharpies.

Production Lesson(s)

Our original plan was actually scrapped halfway through the process because, during one of the inking tests, we accidentally damaged the block, so we couldn't use the original layout anymore. So we revisited an earlier idea we had explored, and used part of the block that was still good. We also embraced a looser approach to the printing—even going as far as applying some ink from the rollers directly on to the paper. We learned a bit about caring for these laser-etched blocks, but also re-learned the joy of having a project change midway through, being forced to embrace a new approach—and ending up preferring it much more than the intended idea. Plus, it was fun to get our hands dirty.”
