This set of split-fountain printed posters, kineticard postcards, and die-cut packaging would be a challenge to design and print no matter how it was done. The Distillery kept the job in-house, and the extra care and quality control shines through in the superb outcome.

Project Description

Suburban Legends is a letterpress poster exhibition, presented by The Distillery. Sydney is an amazingly diverse city and this exhibition is a celebration of that, with 13 artists telling their own story of Sydney suburbs.

This was an invitation to the exhibition, which featured a die cut package, 3 'postcards' and a poster. Each item was letterpress printed in house.

Each postcard features a little vignette, a moment in Sydney, such as driving under the harbor bridge or eating noodles in Cabramatta. Using the overlaid film, each postcard tells a little story through 5 frames of animation.

The poster is a halftone representation of Sydney's suburbs, with iconography to represent each artist's chosen place. This was printed using a split fountain to create the gradient.

Production Lesson(s)

Figuring out how to create Kineticards is incredibly difficult and time consuming—and letterpressing it was even more risky too. The end–result actually turned out much better than I had originally expected.

Keeping the split fountain gradient consistent also proved to be quite difficult, and required cleaning down the press and re-creating the split multiple times. ”
