This calendar showcases Risograph printing through an exploration of overprinting, halftones, and fluorescent inks on craft paper. Jp King designed the mid-century-esque, utopian geometric graphics with two goals in mind: imagined depth on a two dimensional surface and accentuate the inherently retro feel of risography. The finished piece is a fine sample of what can be achieved with this printing method.

Project Description

Paper Pusher is a publisher located in Toronto, Canada, with a focus on Art, Literature, and Design, who also provide Risograph printing services to independent artists, authors, curators, and galleries.

We decided to release this 2013 Calendar to exemplify the Risograph printing process. We wanted to explore overprinting, halftones, and fluorescent inks, while using graphics that would provide illusory depth on a flat surface. With a careful attention to detail and some simple trapping, we were able to get near-perfect register, which goes against the myth that Riso is a sloppy process. The fluro pink ink creates a luminosity that compliments the fibers of kraft paper. An inherently retro "feel" to Riso honours the utopian geometry of isometric angles.

We printed this project by hand on a RISO RP3700, using blue, yellow, and fluorescent pink inks, and rounded the corners at a 3/8" radius. All 12 pages are simply bound with a bulldog clip, so as not to disrupt the paper surface, and hung on a nail, or hook.

Production Lesson(s)

Both a challenge and pleasure with Digital-to-Plate in RISO is choosing the right LPI. On some months I've created chunky halftones (38 LPI) -  See close-up of SEPTEMBER, while on other months the shapes are made up from smooth shades (200 LPI) - See close-up of JANUARY/NOVEMBER. Overprinting various percentages (from 5% to 80%) of each of the three colours creates a range of new hybrid colours - See close-up of JULY.

Near-perfect register was achieved by careful monitoring and manual shifting during the printing of each layer.”
