This monograph chronicles highlights of Randall Reid’s career as an artist and a researcher through layouts designed to get out of the way and let the content speak for itself—instead of distracting from the artist’s work.

Project Description

Randall Reid, an art professor at Texas State University, was named Presidential Seminar Award Recipient based off of his research and creative work at the university. To celebrate his achievement, University Marketing at Texas State University designed a book highlighting some of his work throughout his career.

Office of University Marketing (Texas State University in-house design department):
Art Direction: Julie Babler
Design: Jamie Starcevich
Writing: Billi London-Gray
Project photos: Chandler Prude

Production Lesson(s)

Randall Reid's aesthetic has a very hands on approach, and uses found objects. The challenge of designing this book was to compliment the art, and not to shift focus to the layout design. We chose to use a raw chipboard cover with an exposed spine, complimenting the artist's aesthetic. Subtle elements such as grid paper texture, ruler tick-marks for the folio and typographic quotes add interest to the book, without taking away from the artist's work.”
