These Christmas promos are printed without ink on a specialty paper called Moondream by Cordenons. Moondream becomes translucent when heat and pressure are applied, and it can also be used for regular printing, scoring, folding, and embossing. Just when it seems like we’ve seen it all …

Project Description

A3 Design commissioned Kevin Cantrell Design to produce their 2012 Christmas promotional featuring custom hand lettering and Gruppo Cordenon's Moondream paper, which turns transparent upon hot stamping. The light technique in the print production reinforces the concept of light through the holiday season.

Note: The paper uses excess paper from the "Let There Be Lights" Gruppo Cordenons Paper Promo, submitted previously.

Production Lesson(s)

In connection with the "Let There Be Lights" Gruppo Cordenons Promo, I further learned how to work with the translucent nature of Moondream paper. I had intentionally ordered a deeper metal die for "Lights," but forgot to do so with Joyeux Noël. The deeper die allow for the heat to penetrate deeper into the paper, which allows a faster impression. If the paper touches the heated plate for too long, sticking becomes a problem, as well as an uneven translucency.”
