We see a lot of French Paper here in FPO, but I don’t think we have ever had a project printed digitally on this paper… I love the subtle transparency and the color changes that happen when the ink interacts with the colored paper in this charming series for print design newbies.

Project Description

The Wonderfuls Series was a collaboration between Wonderpress, a Chattanooga-based digital print shop, and graphic design students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) to explore digital printing on fine papers. Each month this year, Wonderpress will mail a miniature comic book printed on French Paper about a best practice in print production and/or graphic design. UTC students developed a cast of superheroes (like Mr. Trim Marks and The Packager) and villains (Like Miss Registration and The Missing Link) who duke it out in each episode.

Production Lesson(s)

We used French Papers in order to experiment with full-color digital printing on brightly colored stock. The subtle transparency of the ink combined with the show-through of the paper elicited color fields unique to this production process. We also incorporated a die cut in one episode and printed individually addressed envelopes for each mailing to show that digital printing projects can be as intricate as those that are offset printed.”
