2e decided to defy the traditional “bad luck” connotations of the number thirteen in this poster series celebrating the company’s thirteenth birthday. Each design celebrates the firm turning another year older with cheerful colors and light-hearted concepts.

Project Description

It’s not every day a company turns 13, which is why we wanted to celebrate by throwing a birthday party. To commemorate the occasion, three of our art directors each created a design revolving around the 13 years since our founding in 1999.

The number 13 has a negative connotation because it’s usually associated with bad luck. So instead of taking the expected “Friday 13th” approach, we gave it a positive spin and just had some fun.
• The “Make Your Own Luck” concept utilizes 13 different luck-related objects.
• “To Hell With Luck” is all about not needing any.
• “Party like it’s 1999” is a fun typographic approach to Prince’s song; can’t go wrong with that.

Prints were made available for sale at our party with proceeds benefitting St. Louis Artworks, an organization that offers art apprenticeships to area youths.

Production Lesson(s)

The posters were designed to be screen printed using French Paper Poptone, but four days before our party, the printer contacted us and said they couldn’t do the job; apparently it just wasn’t coming out right. So, on top of drinking in excess to calm ourselves down, we had to find a printer that could digitally print the posters in 2 days. Luckily, our preferred digital printer was able to help, and the posters turned out wonderfully.”
