This personal project—made possible through an internship—is an homage to Bailey Meadows’s trip to Berlin, of which Mayor Klaus Wowereit said, “Berlin ist arm aber sexy” (Berlin is poor but sexy). The resulting posters, totes, and notepads capture this phrase and in a style reminiscent of graffiti found all over Berlin. The “sexy” lips nail the concept dead on.

Project Description

After spending half of a summer studying and traveling abroad, I returned to my hometown of Orlando, FL to complete an internship at Lure Design Inc. As an intern I was given the opportunity to print my own project using Lure's screen printing facilities. Originally, I wanted to pay homage to my favorite cities during my travels. However given my short time frame, I settled on choosing just one: Berlin.

"Berlin ist arm aber sexy" (Berlin is poor but sexy) was originally spoken by Berlin's Mayor Klaus Wowereit. I heard this quote while in the city and it stuck with me. It is both a humorous and powerful phrase that I wanted to work with in some way.

As I developed this project, I saw that it could expand into more than just a poster. The tote bag and small prints developed naturally through my various iterations of the poster. I hand drew the type and appropriated texture and a set of lips for the imagery. I used three colors: grey, black, and metallic gold. The poster and tote uses the phrase "I am poor but sexy," with Berlin's signature at the bottom. The smaller prints/sketchbooks use the original German quotation. Everything was hand printed by myself and the aid of fellow interns Pati Miller and Alison Aycrigg as well as Lure's Jeff Matz.

Production Lesson(s)

It was problematic printing three colors on the tote bags since I was using just a vacuum table. The tote bags all varied slightly in size since they were handmade for the project and could not really be registered. There was really no way to solve this except with a bit of luck and a few extra bags. Two or three out of about ten came out spot on.”
