Lead Image

One of the motivations behind this project is an effort to bring physicality back to music distribution. This self-published book—not album cover—provides visualizations of the data from music—included on the digitally downloaded album—in a style that reflects the album’s concept and sound. The amount of logic and reasoning behind the decisions made on this project make my design nerd senses tingle with curiosity and delight.

Project Description

"Sadly by your Side" is an eight-song album that describes and explores the theme of distance, how physical and emotional distance can act upon us like a thin blanket of fog, warm and embracing that tries to keep us safe.

"Sadly by your Side" is not only an album. It’s the new outcome of Objectified Mp3, a major project that involves all Fabrica’s creative studios, aiming to reinvent the way Fabrica produces, distributes and enhances its music. Given that music is now a largely digital experience, and physicality is removed or at least transposed, what else could we create around the distribution, discovery and listening experiences? Fabrica’s researchers started from this question, with the intention to create several new forms of music media: a self-published book, a free iOS application and a music video were born, each linked to the other through music to create a powerful aesthetic image.

The eight images of the book provide a visualization of the music data, whilst maintaining an aesthetic reflecting the album’s concept and sound. The tracks are divided into three layers—harmony, melody and rhythm—which are associated with a color, respectively black, blue or red. They show the correct proportions of color that correspond to each track’s original version. When listening, the image series (red, blue and black liquid blotches) may also be used as a “key” to a new iOS synesthetic application that alters the original music tracks with digital sound effects, in response to the number of red, blue and black pixels it “sees” in the real world.

Production Lesson(s)

The greatest achievement a designer can accomplish, is to have the possibility to feel with his own hands the product he created after months and months of designing—above all when it comes from something abstract like music and feeling. This is especially true when the final output is a brand new and innovative product, born from a logical process based on deep formal research.”
