Shed Labs decided to make their own promotional sketch books as a way to have complete control over a project from start to finish. That way they could work without client interference, use their own voice, make their own decisions, and produce their own vision: great reasons for any designer to pursue self-initiated projects.

Project Description

We started making sketchbooks about a year ago using our own premium paper choices and custom stitching and we have been really pleased with how being able to create our own from scratch has allowed us to use our own voice in the products we make. Too often our decisions are ultimately decided by a particular client, but in the case of our promotional work we're at the helm and we can go a little nuts. These sketchbooks just so happen to be a great visualization of what will happen when we're left to our own devices. We always try to make sure that we're pursuing self-initiated projects because often times for designers those are the hardest projects to start and most times the hardest to finish.

Production Lesson(s)

We're always trying to tighten our process and learn as much as we can so totally custom jobs like this always bring a sundry list of challenges. Originally we wanted to do the white color totally as a varnish but the contrast just wasn't there so we ended mixing varnish with a very subtle gray to create a nice effect. Also, the art for these books were created as one long piece of art, so where the first ends the next one begins. Registration was kind of a beast on that front because we had to determine if we could print these little guys 3-up to save time or slow it down and print them one at a time so our images didn't vary too much from book to book. We don't tend to make things very easy on ourselves. I'm not sure if that's because we're still trying to figure all of this stuff out or if we just like it that way.”
