Not only did Alex Pearson put in extensive hours planning and constructing this exceptional illustration, he also produced a shot-for-shot recreation of the scene that inspired the illustration (video embedded at the bottom of the post). From the striking attention to detail to the awe-inspiring textured shading to the jaw-dropping amount of tedious hours put in, this project just keeps on giving.

Project Description

This poster is inspired by my favorite scene in the "Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou". I always loved the cutaway of the ship featured in the movie, and have wanted to illustrate it for years. I spent numerous hours studying shots of the set in that scene, and recreated it in loving detail. I also decided to make a video of my poster that is a shot for shot remake of that very scene in the film. Watch it here.

Production Lesson(s)

The entire printing process and setup was a more daunting task than anything I've done before. Creating manual separations from a file that consisted of hundreds of layers took an exceptional amount of time, then manual trapping took more time on top of that. There was no automation in that process. The screen printing also provided some extra challenges, because most printers don't screen print that large. I usually use a printer in town only a few minutes away from where I work. I ended up finding Baker Prints in Chicago. Because I'm in Nashville, having that distance, and not being able to ride over at a moments notice to proof or approve things adds a level of stress to the job. Not to mention shipping. 200 prints at 18-by-36 is pretty heavy... and large. Despite all this the prints turned out absolutely fantastic.”
