Dripping Slits-Krokodil Rock: Deluxe Edition CD Packaging

The packaging for the Dripping Slits new album “Krokodil” keeps with the band’s brand of minimal and bold graphic imagery. Like the band’s sound, the artwork initially pushes the audience away, then draws them back in to investigate the mysterious imagery and discover the band’s undeniable thrash-meets-blues musicianship. Visual concepts for the “Krokodil” artwork mirror the album’s themes of drug culture and reptile references set off by Russia’s recent Krokodil epidemic.

Project Description

This project started in late 2012 when the "Krokodil" epidemic first hit Russia, and the band came to me with their record title finalized. The design brief for this packaging required that the product be graphically minimal and bold while being both mysterious and unique in regard to layout. The overall feel of the band embraces bold, type-forward design meant to juxtapose both the band name and, this time around, the title for the record. The desired effect of this approach pushes the viewer away at first, but then brings them back in with undeniable musicianship and confidence. I decided on a silkscreened vertical tri-fold package with a glow in the dark layer as a new experiment for myself and the shop. The visual concepts were derived from both drug culture and the repeated reptilian imagery used throughout the record. For the CD release concert, all CD packages were tied off with surgical tubing.

Production Lesson(s)

Using glow in the dark ink was a new experiment to the shop. We used fabric screen printing ink to achieve the effect and unfortunately it did not stay charged and glow as long as I had hoped. Thankfully, the glow in the dark ink appears completely transparent and at least does not interfere with the look of the other inks.”
