Lead Image

The design of these extravagant notebooks pays tribute to Zeri Crafts’ Kuwaiti origins. The geometric pattern on these notebook covers comes from vibrant Al Sadu Bedouin tribal rug weaving patterns. Then, the play of light and shadow created by the pattern alludes to Arabic latticework windows. Altogether, the complete attention to detail, ornate laser-cut, and gold foil edges give these notebooks a feel of extravagant quality and exemplary craftsmanship.

Project Description

Design of commercial notebooks and bamboo bookmark for Kuwait brand Zeri Crafts. The laser diecut pattern is inspired by hanbaliyas from bedouine Sadu crafts, forming a play of light and shadow much like mashrabiyas, the lattice work typical of Arabic architecture. Artisanal gilded edges in gold foil give it a premium status, and the square format, natural proportion of the brand's identity, distinguish these from other notebooks. Available colors are sand, aqua and red sadu. The notebook can be used from left to right or right to left, so it is possible to be used by Arabic users. The Z logotype of the spine works the same no matter what possition the notebook is used.

Production Lesson(s)

The three notebooks were printed at the same time. The gold color was common to all three notebooks and can be seen through the diecut of the cover. In order to conceal the stains of the laser diecut, the inside cover was printed in metallic gold pantone. The elastic band is located underneath the back cover flap, thus clean and invisible.”
