Project Description

The New Heroes 3 is a large-format newsprint magazine that explores the role of mythology in our contemporary society. Modern advances in science and technology have rendered mythology obsolete. But losing our archetypal stories means losing touch with the tradition that comprised our cultural foundation. The heroes in myth not only served to explain the world around us but also helped us make sense of our identity within society. The New Heroes 3 is the search for a reconciliation between our modern world and traditional mythology.

Issue Three contains interviews with Daniel Arsham, Beetroot Design, Mauro Perucchetti, Jared David Paul, Ivan Forde, Tom Berry, and Delphine Diaw Diallo; artists exploring a new definition of mythology for our modern age.

The page structure and proportions of the layout itself were informed by early illuminated manuscripts. The issue was printed on recycled newsprint for its temporal nature. The lifespan of the magazine itself will be short, so its content will have to be passed on orally, much like mythology itself.

Production Lesson(s)

Spend time with your printer discussing how photos will be represented when printing on newsprint. Photography can darken up to 30% and the levels can also alter significantly.

Carefully select the size of the screen used in printing. A finer dot screen will produce a higher resolution image but may also over-saturate the paper stock.”
