This year, Upstatement made a huge step up from simply printing a holiday card for friends, family, and clients. The firm designed and hand-crafted wood boxes and coaster sets, with inspiration from the firm’s century-old office building. The triumph of this project lies in the aesthetic connection of the early 1900s with contemporary times. While these singular tokens of appreciation have a quality and style of a bygone era, modern production techniques provide a link back to the here and now.

Project Description

For the holidays, we milled, sawed, cut 100 gift boxes for friends, family and clients. We also screen printed a set of cards and coasters to include in this box set.

We found inspiration for our holiday card right here at Upstatement HQ. The card features our building in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year. The coaster set shares views from the neighborhood at the turn of the century.

We had a blast making this gift set this year and look forward to expanding upon the idea in 2014!

Production Lesson(s)

Even though we started two weeks earlier than usually the largest take away was to start this project much earlier in the year. We typically just print a card but this year we had the inspiration to build out boxes and include a special gift set inside. More time to mock up work, sketch ideas and leave more time for production may lend more flexibility in the future.”
