These adorable characters were born at the end of a screen printing workshop, but grew up to be a whole line of rustic greeting cards. Made and printed just for fun, each unique piece shines with playfulness and enthusiasm.

Project Description

Kautzi is a small business designing and producing beautiful paper goods with owls. It came to life as a side project and is run by Patrizia and Linus, two designers living and working in Berlin.

During a short course for silk screen printing in London they discovered the love for screen printing. At first the Kautzis were simply a by-product, quickly designed and printed during the last day of the course. But back home they just couldn't stop thinking, playing and working on them. So more and more characters were developed. They set up a small, temporary screen printing facility and started the first edition of hand printed Kautzis. It includes cards in different sizes (standard postcard size and maxi cards for special occasions) as well as prints. They are printed on cardboard, which gives them kind of a rough and rustic look. And it results in truly unique cards. No two items are absolutely identical, which is part of the beauty of the product.

Production Lesson(s)

Be patient—it takes some time to get used to the process. Especially if your printing facility is a bit improvised. Luckily we started production in summer so we could use the backyard for cleaning the screens, otherwise it would have been a huge mess in the bathroom. Another thing is that you have to experiment with different exposure times, screen emulsions and so on. But although our little workshop as well as our printing technique is far from perfection, we are still enjoying the process very much and keen to improve as we go along.”
