A group of designers at Addepar takes a coffee break every day at Bay Area favorite Philz Coffee. As a thank you for the friendly service and atmosphere, Addepar designed and screen-printed a colorful homage to the mural-covered local haunt.

Project Description

Philz Coffee is an amazing bay area favorite. They pride themselves on being in the people business rather than the coffee business, with the motto "one cup at a time". A group of us on the Addepar team finds time to take a break at Philz every day. Addepar Creative Engine is responsible for celebrating company culture through design. We wanted to pay homage to our favorite coffee spot by designing and screen printing this edition on-site at Addepar. The 120 prints were given to Philz who decided to use them as gifts to generous donators. The illustration style and bright colors were influenced by the friendly atmosphere and mural paintings at our frequented location.

Production Lesson(s)

The design originally used pure black as the key image, but we decided to change it to a dark brown to feel less heavy and connect more to coffee and the Philz brand color. However, our 320 mesh screen didn't like the thick ink and we had to hit the brown twice, making it darker than desired. If we print a new edition, we'd like to try adding finely ground Philz coffee to the brown color and pulling it through a 110 mesh. Also, the idea to do an edition of only the key image came up to give to kids as a print to color in themselves.”
