Resisting the urge to use a cloth-type paper for the cover because suede and foil stamping don’t get along, Manic Design saved some budget to put toward a custom envelope for Dilmah Tea’s luxury tea collection catalog.

Project Description

The Teamaker's Private Reserve is a collection of fine single-estate teas curated by the founder of Dilmah, a man who has dedicated his entire life to tea. This collection is targeted at a rarefied group of tea aficionados and buyers in luxury hospitality . The client wanted a catalogue that reflected the same care and attention that was invested in coming up with this line of teas, something that a potential buyer would keep and possibly even refer to for tasting notes and the like. And so we set out to create a catalogue that was as carefully put together as the collection itself. We had lots of fun art directing and shooting many of the richly textured photographs in the book that evoked colonial tea country. For the cover, we decided to complement the visceral qualities with a tactile cover: copper foil on woodgrain textured stock. Finally, with a matching custom-made manila envelope, we think we managed to create something both distinctive and nuanced.

Production Lesson(s)

We learnt from previous projects that it was less than ideal to foil stamp on cloth and suede substrates. For this project, logo was incredibly fine and detailed, so we resisted the allure of cloth-based substrates and picked a beautifully tactile card stock instead. Doing so gave us the budget to create a matching manila envelope, something we jumped at. What we didn't expect was that it took us four tries to get the envelope right! Dielines that worked on screen left a gaping hole near the closure when constructed, and even after we compensated for that, the gap returned when the book was inserted. The envelope needed to be considerably larger than the book for it to fit comfortably.”
