Project Description

This poster specimen was printed in collaboration with Skyline Type Foundry, one of the few metal type foundries in the US creating beautiful type for letterpress printing. It is letterpress printed entirely with hundreds of antique metal type and ornaments all set by hand, and all cast by Skyline Type. It is built to resemble the side of an actual piece of type and is printed in three shades of silver to make it appear luminous.

Sky Shipley (of Skyline Type Foundry) provided the quote, one of his favorites that references the quirky eccentricities of type design. More detail of the process is on our blog.

Production Lesson(s)

While this form was set all as one piece, it was printed in three shades of silver, and getting the registration was much harder than anticipated. Working with many different typefaces led to many workups (when the spacing rises to print level), which slowed printing.”
