Project Description

The London Community Foundation (LCF) were last years lucky winner of The Allotment's "Unwrap a Designer" competition. The competition is for charities in need of design expertise and the winner receives strategic and design guidance donated by The Allotment.

The first task was to find out where and how they could add the most value to an already successful charity "turn lives around" by connecting Londoners who need the most help to donors who are willing to give. We found that their biggest challenge was to explain what they do, simply, in a way that does their role justice.

In answer to this problem, The Allotment created a succinct but powerful little red book (A6 format) that clearly communicated their power of turning lives around; the booklet engaged with the reader by encouraging the physical action of "turning". Throughout the book are a number of clever illustrations created by The Allotment plus a set of case studies that show both sides, the donor and charity story and how their lives have been enriched and strengthened by the power of giving. These were photographed by John Angerson and the copy was written by Neil Baker. The print was delivered by Halstan and sponsored by Deutsche Bank.

Production Lesson(s)

Including a Pantone grey into the photography pages really helped with the depth. After some trial and error the Singer-sewn binding gave us the best results in terms of pages laying flat on each spread, crucial for a project like this.”
