BFA Thesis Project Booklet

Production Method

Sam Wood

BYU Print & Mail

Sam Wood’s BFA thesis asks, “What makes a space sacred?” I’m dying to read the conclusion, but huge full-bleed swaths of black, the most gorgeous (free) gothic font I’ve seen all year, and a tidy little inner booklet all discussing Deep Questions are enough to make this my new holy bible of design.

Project Description

This publication documents my process and research for my BFA thesis paper and exhibit. It is a saddle stitched booklet with a tip-in.

What makes a space sacred? Is it merely a result of its function, or is it by design? When we reduce a space to mere shelter do we limit its potential to inspire, enlighten, and heal?

Production Lesson(s)

Communication with the printers for me was key. As a student, this was my first time working with a printer alone. I had classmates who had trouble with the printers taking liberty without consent. Although it was a straightforward job, it was important for me to sit down with the printers and specify carefully the paper and finishes I needed. As a result, I not only got exactly what I envisioned, but I learned a lot about production in the process.”
