Make, an international design and architecture firm with studios in London, Beijing, and Hong Kong publishes an annual report of sorts each year to showcase completed projects. This, the 10th edition of Make’s annual, sets a celebratory tone with metallic inks, blind embossing, foiling, and special inserts that highlight the firm’s bright history.

Project Description

Since Make was established in 2004, the graphics team has created an in-house annual publication that showcases the projects the practice has been working on throughout the year, as well as including features, essays, interviews, news and events.

Annual 10 is a special edition as it also celebrates Make’s tenth anniversary. The aim was therefore to create an Annual which had a special celebratory feel and could be subtly distinguished from previous editions, while also being easily identifiable as a Make Annual.

The cover uses three different finishes: metallic printing, blind embossing and foiling. The inside pages include seven smaller inserted sections comprising content which celebrates ten years of Make through essays, interviews, awards and statistics etc. These inserts are printed with metallic ink on different paper stock to distinguish them from the standard pages.

Ten detachable postcards showcasing a selection of Make’s built projects are included at the end of the Annual. We commissioned the illustrator Mike Hall to undertake this job.

Production Lesson(s)

As it was Make’s tenth annual publication we wanted something with a celebratory feel which stood out, therefore attention to the finishings was essential.

We explored different ways of printing and binding the Annual and had several dummies made until we eventually found something which complied with printing requirements, while also meeting our budget.

One of the lessons we learnt during this process was that it is all about trying things out. Picking the right metallic ink so it was readable on the dark blue sections, ordering samples from manufacturers to find the right combination of paper stocks, etc. But above all, it was about good communication with our printer, who told us what was and what was not possible and gave advice when needed.”
