If a designer writes a dissertation about hipsters and no one likes it before it was popular, does it still exist?

Project Description

A design piece done as part of my final year dissertation project at Central Saint Martins, consisting of a book and booklet housed inside a custom made box.

This work looks into how the commercial aspects of graphic design has been affected by the dominant counterculture of our times — the modern hipster — to a large extent, and to analyse the hipsters' assimilation process into commercial graphic design in an objective and academic manner by considering the various reasons and background factors that have led to it. The usage of silkscreen printing on greyboard is a reference to the hipsters' obsession with perceived authenticity and mechanical processes in today's increasingly digitalised world.

Production Lesson(s)

It was important to experiment with using cardboard stock when silkscreen printing — the ink behaves differently depending on the absorbency of the stock.”
