Auburn University’s Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art brings in a different poet each third Thursday of the month for an evening of extended gallery hours, jazz, tapas, and of course, poetry readings. To commemorate the 2014-2015 season of the series, professor Robert Finkel and his team of design colleagues visually interpret a poem from each poet into a set of 8 broadsides presented in a custom-made portfolio box.

Project Description

To commemorate the 2014-2015 season of the Third Thursday Poetry Reading Series at Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, faculty and alumni from the Graphic Design department at Auburn University were invited to create an edition of seventy-five sets of eight broadsides representing a unique visual interpretation of a poem written by each month's visiting poet. Each broadside is letterpressed in 2-colors, all sharing one ink with the second ink selected by the designer. They are presented as a set in a custom-made portfolio available for purchase from the museum gift shop.

Production Lesson(s)

Coordinating the printing of eight different designs required several efficiency measures for both production and costs. The first was to work from a 26-by-40-inch parent sheet to determine the 8-by-13-inch broadside size. Yet, taking into account Murphy's Law, our departmental paper guillotine cutters bed was only 24-inch-wide. I had to race around town to find a one larger. Shout out to Craftmaster Printers in Auburn!”
