When you first get this nifty little box in the mail you don’t want to rip it apart. But once you muster the courage to do so, there is great satisfaction in revealing a typographic ornament that can be used on a X-mas tree, or even long after the holidays are over.

Project Description

The goal of the project was to create an object that is both elegant and precious, yet ephemeral. It’s meant to be ripped open to reveal a surprise. Something that stands out from the piles of holiday cards.

Inside the hand folded box is one of five unique ornaments which were laser-cut and etched from quarter inch white acrylic to stand out against the deep green of a Christmas tree. Each of the five ornaments features a unique ampersand that was lettered by hand before being vectorized for production.

The package is a 3.5 × 3.5in box with a perforated tear strip down the middle that opens up in two haves to reveal the ornament. The metallic silver and gold inks were silkscreened and meant to capture the festive feel of the season. The paper stock is French Paper 100C selected for its rigidity and tactile feel.

Over a hundred of these gifts were hand assembles and sent to clients and colleagues.

Production Lesson(s)

Each of the boxes was die-cut with a plotter that did took quite a bit of adjustment to properly but the cover stock and especially the perforation for the tear-strip. The speedball silkscreen inks turned out to be much more durable that expected and did not shot any scuffs or damage after quite a bit of testing abuse. ”
