When I first saw this wedding invitation I knew it had to be a small run—there is just now way to sustain the beautiful hand-stitching for a large quantity. Without a doubt each copy is a labour of love.

Project Description

My fiance and I wanted a small destination wedding, meaning that for so few invitations needed, many expensive printing options were off the table. Earl Dobec, an account executive at Colour Innovations in Toronto who I have been doing business with for years, kindly offered to print what we needed for free. The front and the back of the invitations were printed on separate cards, and it was a fairly effortless process to glue them together and drill the holes required for the stitching with a Dremel. Finally, the border of each invitation was stitched by hand, which was the most time-consuming part of the whole thing.

The front illustration was taken from a vintage French prayer card, which I cleaned up and refined digitally. I wanted to rest of the card to exude simplicity and elegance, with a small, subtle nod to a Southwestern motif on the back, as befits the location of our ceremony.

Production Lesson(s)

As with my hand-made Family Recipes book, I continue to believe that costly printing processes, overly fussy design and a big budget are not always necessary to create a good print piece - attention to detail and a personal touch can go a long way.”
