Project Description

For three generations, the Sakao Tea Shop of Shizouka, Japan has preserved the art of tea service to provide tea lovers with a rich, aromatic experience. Sakao Enterprise developed their traditional, proprietary method some 80 years ago to process tea leaves while maximizing freshness and flavor.

For their new packaging, we wanted to reflect on the process of things, and we decided to do all the printing by hand, cutting, burning and printing wood along the way. We hot-stamped a little rounded rectangle on the pouches and the master was sculpted by hand as well. All in all, it was a very organic process, echoing the values of Sakao Enterprise.

Production Lesson(s)

The process asked for a lot of tests. For the wood, we tried a few things, before deciding to burn lightly the surface in order to produce a more precise print. The printing of the pouches on our Chandler & Price was quite challenging as well, since we didn't want to emboss on the back-side of the pouch and the paper was quite thin. We finally succeeded by adding a movable plexiglass plate near the drum of the press, which made the whole process possible.”
