Project Description

We had a goal to keep things economical while giving our guests something they may want to hold on to past our wedding date. Inspired by the venue - a renovated fire station built in 1906 - our single card invites were a way to share information (with custom lettering influenced by early 1900s advertisements) and be a 5x7" limited-edition 3-color screen print of a great piece of Chicago history.

Production Lesson(s)

Deciding to teach yourself how to screen print while planning a wedding may not be the best way to reduce stress! But now that it is in the past, I am happy I dove in to create something that was truly personal from start to finish for our guests. The biggest lesson was figuring out how much my mood could affect the printing process: a positive mood going in could bring hours of perfect pulls and mixed colors—a negative mood could bring lots of off-registered prints and lost time. Now any printing is planned around good days for good luck! Also, having a friend there to transfer prints to the drying rack and set a new sheet into place while refilling the screen was a big time saver; having an extra set of eyes to make sure things are looking alright never hurts, either!

Since this was a personal project, it became a way to learn and practice many different things: calligraphy, leather stamping (for our luggage tag favors), and how to compromise with a client who also happens to be your spouse. :)”
