A typographic exploration that matches the 8-panel challenge of flipping through a booklet that unfolds to a large poster. With issues 1 and 2 printed, I look forward to the next (already planned) four issues.

Project Description

Letting Type Talk is a series of posters/visual essays that provides insight on a very important aspect of design: innovative exploration of typography. It is a love letter to a select few typographers from across the globe - those who have shaped the world of graphic design and visual culture through their contributions to the field. For some, this may even serve as an introduction to new ways of talking through type.

Each issue highlights one specific designer, displaying both their famous and lesser-known works, as well as a look into their unique methods of working with type. Each issue also comes with a set of 4 postcards based on the work of that issue's designer.

These are the first two of six planned issues.

Production Lesson(s)

When starting the project, I wanted to honor each typographer the right way - I couldn't decide between a booklet, poster, essay, or a pamphlet, so in the end I sort of combined them all into one, where I could cut a portion of the poster down the middle so it could be folded into a booklet, with the backside featuring an essay I wrote in admiration of the design history. This made the front-facing poster a challenge when folded, because each portion had to be interesting in its own right so it could be flipped through, so I scattered little details across each of the 8 panels.”
