By designing eight individual panels that would complete a whole, Mike Sulick faces a unique challenge—one he has chosen to tackle not once, but six times as he explores the impact of prominent typographers through their contributions. Issues 1 & 2 can be found here.

Project Description

Letting Type Talk is a series of posters/visual essays that provides insight on a very important aspect of design: innovative exploration of typography. It is a love letter to a select few typographers from across the globe - those who have shaped the world of graphic design and visual culture through their contributions to the field. These posters aim to shine a light on those who carved the path for modern typography and stressed the importance of type being central to the design and the message.

The second two issues include the work of Philippe Apeloig and Herb Lubalin - two typographers who favor typographic expression over strictly informational text, and are very playful in their use and arrangement of letterforms. Each of these issues also comes with a set of 4 postcards based on the work of that issue's designer.

These are the third and fourth of six planned issues.

Production Lesson(s)

When folded in booklet form, I had to ensure sure each panel on its own could capture the raw visual impact of each designer's work and tell a piece of a greater story. When unfolded into a poster, all the pieces would then come together to form an overall portrait of the designer and their body of work. The back of the poster was created to give a more in depth look at who these designers are through examples of their work and an essay honoring their life and career. The end result is the front looking like a collage of each designer'€™s typography, with the back being a more clear and concise analysis. ”
