Personally I don’t care about beer given my dislike for the flavor—yet the packaging is another story, it fascinates me. When this guide arrived in the mail a few weeks back it went straight to my nightstand as a great insight into a world I know little about. A great promo by Neenah and CODO Design that you can get for yourself to see, in detail, what I am raving about.

You can order a free copy here, compliments of Neenah Packaging.

Project Description

CODO Design has worked with breweries across the country (and increasingly, the world) on their branding, packaging, web design, and marketing. After years of working in this field, we gathered our experience and insights into a free online resource, culminating in the Craft Beer Branding Guide (www.craftbeerbrandingguide.com).

Originally launched in August 2016, the step-by-step guide to branding and positioning a craft brewery was so well received in the craft beer (and design) community that in December, Neenah Packaging reached out to us to partner on a special print run.

The availability of this book coincides with the launch of Neenah Packaging’s expansion of its BELLA Label Papers line with new label papers. CODO has used Neenah Paper for years and were honored to partner with them on this project.

You can order a newly printed book for free, compliments of Neenah Packaging.

Production Lesson(s)

The biggest challenge we worked through was how to print bright white text on Neenah’s new CLASSIC CREST Imperial Red Cover stock. We worked with Faulkenberg Printing out of Franklin, IN, to see how various hits of white and silver ink would lay down on the stock. We weren’t getting the effect we wanted and were actually running out of time when, on a whim, we tried a matte white foil. It ended up looking better than we had hoped for and created a luxe feel to the piece (especially when combined with the blind embossed chapter numbers across the front cover).

We wanted to go with a slightly heavier paper stock on the cover but then the blind emboss wouldn’t have been as pronounced. Our workaround for that was to gatefold the cover. This ended up being a better solution because we were able to cut slots into the inside back cover to hold a custom, beer bottle-shaped die cut swatch book.

The swatch book was a last minute idea. We were able to print (albeit, in miniature) some of our favorite past bottle labels on Neenah’s new BELLA craft beer line. Other than the cover, this ended up becoming one of our favorite elements of the project (it’s a fun surprise to find it at the end of the book). ”
