Pixel Goddess

For all those who love the ‘extra baroque bitmappiness’ (-Typographica) of Speak Up!, here’s an oldie but goodie link to one of the folks who started it all: the one and only Susan Kare, creator of Chicago, Geneva, and the immortal dog-cow Moof! She even has an extra-tasty collection of pixel fonts and icons for sale. Nice collection of design-related articles as well. My virgin post, be gentle.

It doesn't get any better than that. When somebody asks "what is design good for?" just show them this. She utilizes the medium so well and at the same time she manages to make it pretty. It's too bad that her icons are slowly going away. But they will live forever in our memories.

And this is pixel heaven to the nth degree

Kare shows us all what is possible when one is forced to the extremes of creativity by external restrictions such as small memory size, tiny color palettes, etc. Restrictions and rules, however arbitrary they may seem, are the midwives of inspiration.
