A Celebration of Death, Arrival and — why not? — Design
Or, Let’s Party

For a few weeks after having arrived in New York we’ve been wanting to have a city-warming party, but it seemed gratuitous to just have a party for the sake of it. What we needed was an excuse… Columbus Day? Not that happy a day. Halloween? Ew, no, too trite. Thanksgiving? Too far away. Then it came to us: Day of the Dead. A rich, creepy, joyful, sad, colorful Mexican tradition. (We’ve previously celebrated it here on Speak Up to little acclaim, no screen shots of the “event” unfortunately). Yes, Day of the Dead, would be (and is!) our excuse.

Read on after the poster for all the info.

DayOfTheDeaf_Invite_White.gif

So, with that said, we would like to invite you (if you happen to be in the New York metropolitan area) to celebrate a) Day of the Dead, b) Speak Up’s arrival in the city and — why not? — c) the beautiful profession that is graphic design.

Thursday, November 4th at 7:30 PM at:

Plantain (on the upstairs lounge)
20 West 38th Street
New York, NY

We will have some food to warm your belly and some sugar “Calaveritas” to freak you out. We would love to buy your drinks, but we need a heck of a lot more advertisers to afford that luxury. Bring your money then, to enjoy Plantain’s delicious Mojitos.

If you would like to come, you can just show up and say hi, but we would absolutely love it if you let us know so that we can prepare accordingly. Please RSVP (to Bryony) if your heart so desires.

Hope to see you there.

We encourage the riff-raff (david's term!) to come by all means!!!! We were all riff-raffers at some point or another.

Two Days after Voter Intimidation and Recounting Ballots.

And the Supreme Court Deciding yet another Presidency.

I Dunno !!!!!

You may want to have a Reserved Rain Date. Just In Case.

Actually, I thought the Party

would be after the New Year.

Sorry, Can't make it.

Anyway, Buy A Dark Gable Mask.

And put a Sparkling Cider or Ginger Ale in front of it for me.

If you ever look at Howard Stern.

You know what I'm talkin bout.

Even though I fall under the category "riff-raff" I will most likely stop by... Just moved here to NY myself (Brooklyn, too!) and I am currently an MFA design widow.

Looking forward to meeting some people who might be able to provide some intelligent human interaction, industry expertise and tips on where to find some cheap drinks in this crazy city!

And of course I have to meet Armin and Bryony and the other SpeakUp celebrities.

DesignMaven: if you happen to be in Edmonton the night of the bout, I'm sure arrangements could be made to have you be the honorary bell ringer. We'll also need an unbiased judge to score points; Marian are you available?

if you really want Maven to come just invite Michael Bierut i just attended an amazing lecture with all of the Pentagram NY partners, unfortunately, it was down here in Baltimore...wish i could be back home in NY to meet all the celebs at Speak Up (even if i am riff-raff), but alas, i'm travelling there at thanksgiving, and would be a bit late for the party...

This riff raff has type class on Thursday nights. Damn New York and its continual insistence on Thursday nights.

On Oct.19.2004 at 12:01 PM
Armin’s comment is:

We'll probably still be there by the time the riff-raff* is done with type class and the AIGA event is over. (The AIGA goes to sleep early, while Speak Up parties on at night).

Seriously, I think by, say, 10 pm we will still be there, so come on buy and curse your type teachers over a mojito.

* Please note that I do not encourage or endorse the use of riff-raff.

Just shows how much my MENTOR thinks of his ACOLYTE. I was not PRIVY to that information.

He just LOVES Berating me in public about using his Red Pencil to correct my punctuation.

I more than make up for it in Design Acumen. So that keeps him happy.

Peter:

I'd love to have the CD. Sending you my Address.

I promissed to write anyway.

Michael Surtees:

I'm afraid, I'd be about as HONEST as DON KING in that Fight.

No what I'm talkin bout.

Rob Bennett:

If you're going let me know. I'll try to make some arrangements to get to Baltimore. By Marc Train.

I can help on the Gas.

Shout Out:

If anybody is going from Baltimore. Let me know.

I'll try to make arrangements.

If I don't go. I'll definetely make the next one.

Que la chingada! I'm gonna miss it. Are you going to make an altar as well? That would be nice.

Armin’s comment is:

Nicely put Jerry.

> Are you going to make an altar as well? That would be nice.

Not this year. We don't want to make it overly creepy and freaky for our unsuspecting guests. Next year, maybe, we can introduce the altars. We might do a little somethin' to celebrate some design "deaths" this year though.

Armin & Bryony, please post some pictures after tonight's excellent shindig.

And if anyone will be in North Wales with nothing to do tomorrow night, give me a shout. We'll drag you along to the Bonfire Night celebrations in Tal-y-Bont.

On Nov.04.2004 at 07:48 AM
Armin’s comment is:

Well, we'll still have a bitchin' time. We'll think of graham and party like it's 1999, he would.

So, for all you that are going to AIGA's Designustration thing or have type class or other engagements that keep you busy until 9pm or so be sure to come by then, we will still be there.

On Nov.04.2004 at 08:51 AM
Armin’s comment is:

One little thing, for those of you who are extremely punctual and wanted to get ther at 7:30 sharp, make it more like 8:00 pm sharp. We need to kick some people out of the area where we will be who will be there before.

Michael Surtees’s comment is:

so how was it—any stories worth sharing?

On Nov.10.2004 at 11:05 PM
Armin’s comment is:

It was a good party. Unfortunately, we were competing againts a heavily-rainy night, an AIGA event and a book presentation that same night, so attendance wasn't as high as expected. We still managed to have a great time. There were no drunken antics to report.
