One of the better-known photographers of America’s greatest art form, William Gottlieb, passed away last week. This iconic image of Thelonious Monk, as well as many others can be seen in this online collection at the Library of Congress.

So I guess I’ve been pronouncing his name wrong all these years… Announcing a new film about type designer Adrian Frutiger (aad-ri-aan froo-tee-ger).

Once again, photography trumps all: as a service to the anti-Kyoto Bush administration, all the selfish asses with gas-guzzling SUVs, and pretty much everyone else in the developed world; the National Snow and Ice Data Center has compiled a special collection of photographs which pair late-19th/early-20th century photographs of Alaskan glaciers with more recent images.

Opening this Saturday: “Picasso as Book Illustrator” at the Legion of Honor, one of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Imagine a spineless art director asking Picasso to change a color because the editor doesn’t like blue. Heh…

Eric Benson launches Re-Nourish, a site full of actionable tips, tools, and resources for sustainable graphic design. Re-Nourish was Benson’s MFA thesis from University of Texas at Austin. I’ve got some thoughts about it on Crit.

Typecast, the typography short, is awarded the Los Angeles Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary short. It plays for one night in New York this weekend.

Prepare your everybody has the tools now so they’re going to ruin us complaints, Google launches SketchUp the free 3-D rendering tool. Oh, nevermind, put those away and get out your there’s no mac version and my PowerPC-based laptop is depreciating at three times the rate now that Apple’s switched to Intel complaints.
