Big! Bigger! Biggestest!

Because it’s Friday. Because it has been a long week. Because taxes are due in three days. Because you’ve heard the expression many more times than you would ever have to. Because, today, it won’t be the last time you hear it. Because of these, and many more reasons, we are presenting our most lighthearted, silly post in years: Two minutes and thirty-six seconds of the rockingest rendition of Make the Logo Bigger that you will ever hear. (Music after the jump.)

This ballad has been composed and performed by Burn Back for I Have An Idea’s Portfolio Night 5.

And may we recommend some reading to go with your easy listening.

Thanks to Katie Repine for the late Friday afternoon treat.

Also, please explain how much you want to make it flocked with black velvet on your annual.

Never have I heard anything so ridiculously fun, and so true! And a quick tour of Burn Back and I Have An Idea's websites gives me the impression this isn't the last we've heard from them before this Portfolio Night event. The portfolio demon on their landing page is pretty hilarious as well.

I wonder if playing this song for clients would give them the message?

Pete Goode’s comment is:

sad, sad, sad, sad, sad.
or as Metallica once said: Sad but True!

We as graphic designers need to convey how logos, like technology, gain coolness and presence that is inversely proportionate to the size.

Of course size matters... but large doesn't mean it's good...

However, We at Goode Design have come up with a solution for Perpetually Small Logo Syndrome or PSLS for short... We've begun making the logo actually LARGER than the media on which it is printed... How can you do this? Easy... With our new patented Logo Gigantification Process (LGP) We're able to create elastic logos that actually enlarge in the eyes of the client. Like a sponge in the presence of water, when light is reflected off of the Clients' corneas, the logo actually becomes larger. Thus, Goode Design is able to give the client a regular sized brochure or billboard design, but the logo actually enlarges upon light refraction. Now we're able to put microscopic logos in the actual text and the end customer is hypnotized into buying the product.... You're actually unaware... but now you want to buy one of our products.

well, visit Goode Design for your logo embigification or gigantification.

Jerry Kuyper’s comment is:

I love this song, it reminds me of a Spinal Tap song about size.

My first thought would be to change the lyrics to:

"Make the logo appropriately sized in relation to other elements on the page".

Not as catchy. As I thought further an entire CD began to emerge.

Several track possibilities inspired by the following examples:

YOUR CHOICE. YOUR CHASE

In this campaign the tagline has been set in the CHASE logotype font and runs the width of the ad.

Track 2 "Don't stick things on the logo" Chorus "It isn't a magnet"
_____

LIFE TAKES VISA

In this case, LIFE TAKES is placed as a read through to the VISA logo yet the tagline is larger.

Track 3 "Make the tagline smaller"
_____

Several years ago I conducted a communication review for a large insurance company. My favorite example was a direct mail piece that was well designed with engaging headline and imagery. Upon closer examination I saw the company logo wedged between the edge of the card and the photograph at an apologetic size.

I said to my client, I am a designer, I know what happened, this piece was headed to the printer when someone said "Whoa, this piece doesn't have our name". The designer then wedged it in at the last minute.

Track 4 "Don't forget the logo"
_____

Same client, different brochure with a six inch wide logo on a standard size brochure. It was printed in black on a dark green and barely visible.

Track 5 " Make the logo readable" Chorus "Size isn't everything"
_____

For some reason sizing logos for websites causes all considerations of clear space to be discarded.

http://www.aquaamerica.com/

Track 6 "Give the logo some breathing room"
_____

As a final comment before approving our work, the Chairman of the insurance company said " Make the logo bigger". He was right, all of my designers agreed. I agreed then and I still agree four years later and when I show the case I always credit him with that comment.

Track 7 " Listen to your clients" Chorus "Sometimes, just maybe, they might be right"

Wow, is this the work of an agency? I went to ihaveanidea's site and I gather that Burn Back (aka William Bernbach, founder of DDB) is headlining their Portfolio Night event, but does the band exist at all? Is this a band of advertising or design people that someone discovered for this event, or were they made for this event? Did DDB make this? Taxi does ads for ihaveanidea, did they make this?

Maybe I should just enjoy it and not think about it. The other song is funny. The videos are funny. Their biography on their website is funny. But 'Make The Logo Bigger' is hysterical.

And I will play this for the very next person who asks me to make the logo bigger, be they client or account manager. Oh, I won't be mean spirited. I'll just say "funny you should ask that, I have a song right here that says the exact same thing!"

Made my top 10!

When I was a young art director in Houston (this being before the railroads went all the way across the U.S.) I would create two layouts for clients like this; one with the logo exactly to the size and placement I wanted and then one about 25% smaller. I'd show the client and account exec. the small one first and when they sang the tune "I don't want to tell you how to do your job but Make the Logo Bigger!" I'd leave the room returning with the the version I wanted to begin with. This ploy worked virtually every time. They were happy. "Oh yes! See, that's much better!" I'd say "You are right. What an eye!"

Once you get past honesty and integity you can make a lot of money in the advertising business.

Would it be possible to have our two logos below the design and a little larger? We were thinking that they might show up better that way -- and be easier for passers-by to see them clearly. Just a thought?

More Pizazz!
I Always Wanted to Be a Designer (But I Went Into Marketing Instead)

I Laid It Out on this Post-It Note
I'll Leave That Up to You 'Creative Types'

I don't know what's funnier, the song or the comments below. If, let's just say, I've played this loop continually for an hour or so, does that make me cuckoo? I can't stop myself. I have it playing in the background while I'm checking emails. I fear that once I share this with the studio tomorrow, we shan't be getting any work done. Check out an episode called "Prooforia" on wiztoons.com. The funny thing is that clients don't see themselves in any of this. Wait. Is that funny...or...scary....?

I once took screen dumps of leading multi-national websites and drew a grid on them to show logo proportion - then did the same for the client's site to demonstrate that his logo was already the right size. He signed off on the spot.

I've had a client sit next to me and instruct on the placement of elements... for days on end... for a god forsaken business card. Being a realestate agent and all, she was clearly an expert. In the end her logo was so massive it consumed the ENTIRE business card (end to end, top to bottom) with details inside it... at which point she exclaimed "ahh that looks much better!" - I'm not sure if it was the fact that she actually beleived it was better, the prospect of having to repeat the process for her letterhead and withcomps, or the fact that she was simply a crass whore, but I was compelled at this moment to calmly tell her to shove the whole thing up her arse and get the hell out. It was one of the finest moments of my career...

Greetings,

I am fifteen and have been interning in a graphic design studio for about two months (to my delight) and I just thought I'd mention something that happened today at the studio pertainin to this wonderful song.

I have been working on a prospective company t-shirt and asked my supervisor if they had the logo any larger than I had already recieved for better visibality on the shirt. With a smile on his face he turned to a fellow employee and said, "Make the logo bigger." With that, the employee turned back to his computer and opened his iTunes and "Make the Logo Bigger" was blasted, to everyone's joy amd amusement.

This song rocks, every graphic designer should here this ode to the Logo (and its proper size).

It's been a while already this song it out. I'm posting really late. I just re-listen to it after a few months, and I must say even after a while, really hits it for me. This is awesome. A really well-executed and funny joke.

I gotta say I'm shocked and amazed (and quite honored) this is still making the rounds, long after the event we created it for has passed. Thanks a million everyone, and keep making that logo bigger.

I know this is really late to post this, but I heard this song last year at some point while I was still in college, but I recently remembered it, and decided to pass it around at work this week. Hey, I'm on the client side, delivering all those "make the logo bigger" edicts, and I still found this hilarious. Now get back to work and make my logo bigger! And make it pop!
