Type Quiz, Hot Shot

I posted this on Quipsologies last night, but I thought it warranted opening it up to the knowledgeable crowd here on Speak Up and see how all of you fare. Empire magazine has put up a rather difficult quiz that challenges both your typographic prowess as well as your cinephiliac tendencies: Can you guess the movie from just one letter from its poster? The interactivity is kind of clunky: Enter an answer and hit enter to see if you got it right or wrong; if you can’t figure something out, just click on the letter clipping to reveal the full poster; and then you have to count manually how many you were able to answer and how many you got right. Me? I didn’t do as well as I thought… Answered 23, Right 17. Honor system please!

One of the incorrect ones came to me moments after it scored. Bah!

Fun game, though!

That was fun! Very tough though, I go to the cinema at least twice a week and struggled with quite a few, quite proud I could recognise the Showgirls poster from one letter though!

Gordon. Nice score, but even with 52% right it's still a failing grade. Haha. Glad they didn't give us this test in school.

I did fairly well of those I answered, but too many of the letters were just too generic. Thanks for the fun.

I clearly never go to movies in cinemas. I think it's a kind of agorphobia hearing people wolf down tubs of popcorn that turns me batshit crazy.
Still, some of these are pretty recognizable flat out.

One where I had to slap my forehead was the poster for Scream. I thought it was its satire, Scary Movie.

This reminded me of a game me and an old roommate would play to try and guess the movie based on the opening credits typeface. Great little test, I wish I had done better.

26 right out of 46. Most of the missed ones I skipped, though I made the same mistake choosing Scary Movie in place of Scream. They made it easier than they had to, they could easily have chosen 46 different movie posters set in tracked-out Trajan.

They all seem so obvious after you see them.

21 right.

I thought the M from Scream was from Scary Movie, too! That was hard, but fun.

...most of that comes to the fact I haven't seen 1/4 of those movies.

Amen to the Trajan comment ('I am legend' anyone?). Red & Black sans-serif in thin and bold would also be hard to pick as well (The Heartbreak Kid, Love Actually, Definitely Maybe etc) - Seems common in mainstream comedy/chick flick type films.

Love this game! I had 2 correct but were counted wrong because I used an ampersand on one, and must have misspelled the Disney film about spotted dogs. I think #33 is tricky because they rotated the letter differently from how it's used on the poster. The last one must come up only if you guessed all of them. Should have had "Gone with the Wind", the quotes were obvious on that one.

12 right.

I thought the M from Scream was from Monsters, Inc. I was way off but I got most of the other kids movies, I guess that's what happens when you're a parent. Oh well. 12 is pretty good for someone who doesn't see many movie posters.

If anyone is really bored I'd love to see them (you?) do a similar game with...say, foodstuff logos...or any other advertising-driven market.

I'm feeling a little inferior. There were so many I had an idea about, or could at least guess the genre, but the right name never came to me!

Fun game though.

Some of the ones I skipped I had a feeling I knew what they were, but couldn't remember (e.g. Aliens).
