Spencer Charles is a graph­ic design­er, let­ter­er, and typog­ra­ph­er resid­ing in Brook­lyn, NY. After grad­u­at­ing in 2010 from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Utah in Salt Lake City, he moved to New York, NY, to work at Louise Fili Ltd.

BRIEF

The goal of this art print was to cre­ate a con­tem­po­rary rein­ter­pre­ta­tion of illu­mi­nat­ed letterforms.

APPROACH

The con­cept behind this print was to use a com­mon rec­og­niz­able sym­bol or form as the sub­ject of the com­po­si­tion, and abstract­ing it with the rep­e­ti­tion of lines. The gold foil is a nod to the illu­mi­nat­ed and embell­ished cap­i­tals seen in medieval manuscripts.
