A labor or love, not only for his wife, but what her students were up against. A tight budget, a neat idea, a lack of design direction… this is where Tommy Perez stepped in and discovered that helping out sometimes takes more time than intended, but in the end it is worth it.
My wife’s a high school teacher and the class of 2012 advisor. This year was their year to plan the class prom. The class chose to have the dance at the Air & Space Museum in San Diego, so fittingly they chose a “Flying First Class” theme. They had a super tight budget, so naturally my wife asks if I could design some tickets for the event (happy wife, happy life). Inspired by the flying theme, I designed the tickets and sleeves to resemble airline boarding passes. Each ticket was stuffed, hand-stamped and placed in a delicious “Wild Cherry” envelope. I also created paper airplanes, which the kids threw all over campus and later were used as a lunchtime activity. To wrap up the “First Class” theme, luggage tags were created for the give away at the end of the prom.
Working within a tight budget, I opted to print all the materials (minus the shirts) digitally myself. After everything was printed, the tickets, sleeves and tags were trimmed and folded by my wife and myself using a desktop cutting plotter. We then hand-stamped all 800 tickets, placed them in their sleeves and stuffed them into numbered envelopes. Thankfully her students helped with the stuffing of the luggage tags in their holders or I would have gone insane. It was quite an undertaking, and at times I was pulling at my hair because the stacks of paper seemed to be never-ending.
