If you have some time to kill between now and Monday (or any day after that actually) perhaps you would like to test your brand awareness by taking The Brand Quiz, a fairly difficult challenge that asks you to name a brand based on two color hints and two ambiguous hints. I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit I only scored 14/21, but I had a root canal and wisdom tooth pulled out on Tuesday, so I’m pretty sure something, somewhere got dislodged in the process. If you think you can do 21/21 there is still the challenge of doing it in less time than your opponents. The quiz has been put together by London-based VYRE.
I got 14/21.
Is there a list of the answers somewhere? The one with the two purples and the glass of milk and clue: I can feel it coming in the air tonight” stumped me (among others).
20/21
Paraná! :)
My score doesn’t show up. Not that anyone’s counting, but I’m counting.
It told me I got 19/21, but I’m sure I missed at least 4, so I’m not sure how the scoring works. I’d also love to see the answers.
Submit doesn’t work for me, despite getting 20/21 =(
Katie: check out this ad.
I didn’t get the “mind the brand” one unfortunately, and the clues for the last one are a bit confusing, and easier to tell if you’re UK based.
17/21
14. missed that one too.
My 20/21 answers - highlight to see:
1. Amazon
2. Ikea
3. PayPal
4. Shell
5. Starbucks
6. Harley Davidson
7. Cadbury
8. Nokia
9. Nintendo
10. Caterpillar
11. Coca Cola
12. Hertz
13. Blockbuster
14. FedEx
15. ?
16. McDonalds
17. BP
18. Virgin
19. Yahoo
20. Visa
21. Olympics
Text above should be all white…
The one you missed is gap.
18/21 I was worried as an American there might be too many brands I wasn’t familiar. I forgot our brands are so ubiquitous.
I do hope they at some point post the answers. Missed Cadbury, the Brazilian River one (which I first thought was VALE, but wrong colors), and whatever the one with the bees and the gas tank cover was.
Aced. Please remember this when you look at the high scores and it doesn’t reflect any of ours.
Some of these I thought were less familiar as an American (a certain candy company), but the hardest ones were those whose brand colors I didn’t associate strongly with the brand (a certain mobile service provider and the first question with the Brazil logo, who I think of as orange and blue, due to it’s website).
17!
Argh so close! 20/21. That was fun! I missed #19. I thought #20 was Flickr at first, but then realized it was a torch.
Seriously, I know this sounds like a stupid question, but am I the only one that can’t figure out where to click submit (to get past the first question)?
Amazon =P
quite clever…
+1 @Meryl Friedman, and what is a logo purpule withe a milke it isen’t a Milka !
17/21! Fun!
19… I drank a little, but I guess it wouldn’t make much difference at all. Nice quiz!
21/21
for those stuck on 15 think of famous UK signage when reading the letter clue.
what is a logo purple with a milk it isn’t a Milka !
Having worked in Germany, I thought the exact same thing! At last minute the right answer came to me, though.
I missed one – as scottish as apple pie?!? I still don’t get it and I know the answer – and didn’t get the last question, yet it gave me a 21/21 score. Perhaps I was just radiating brandsmarts through the interwebs. ;-)
Missed Cadbury and Nokia, but I got all of the others fairly easily.
@cody milhouse - It submits itself when it decides you’re right (or you can skip)
@ JonSel
Think of common Scottish (and Irish) surnames.
I found this quiz a bit unsatisfying (maybe because I didn’t do very well) but thanks Karan for the answers, that made it more interesting.
These, however, I found to be a lot of fun (the contest is long over, btw):
Paraná
I surprisingly managed a 20/21!
Missed the blockbuster one, I haven’t rented a movie in about 8 years lol.
21/21. You brandnewsies got served.
The game is stingy.
I put an answer in but when i go to press enter it comes up with a question mark.
Would i be doing anything wrong?
17/21. Yay! There were a few there that I had no idea…
Fun way to make a quiz. Too bad it doesn’t register scores properly; pretty sure my 6 minute 19/21 should go above the 11 minute 18/21 guy.
16/21 they say. Not bad at all.
Sorry, typo. 19/21. But it didn’t go on the hi-score list. What’s up with that?
18/21
Honestly, the colors were generally the second, if not third clue for me. I mostly got these based off of the verbal clues. I’m not a very brand conscious person though—meaning I don’t buy many brand-name items.
amazon.com
21/21!
“Oh mommy… help me… I had dental work done and was stoned out of my mind…” Waaahhhhhh! Cry me a river. It’s not like you were giving birth or something… oh… wait…
HAHAHAHAHAHA
VR/
p.s. Good luck to you both!
Surprised I got some of the more Euro-centric ones. I’m guessing most Americans only know Cadbury for their chocolate easter eggs.
4/21 … I am officially changing careers. Thank you!
That was cool but broken. Seriously - I missed a few and still scored 21. Maybe it just sensed my potential ;)
18/21 here, which surprised me. I didn’t think I’d do so well.
Can anyone explain to me why MM aspect of the last clue was BWU rather than SYD? Bankstown airport? Really? And what were the colour hints for that one about?
Hi everyone,
Theo from VYRE here, the guy to blame for the quiz.
Thank you all very much for playing it, and thanks too for your comments - I’m going to look at the hi-score thing today and see what’s going on. Sorry to all those winner winner chicken dinners who have been conned out of their well deserved glory :)
@cody milhouse and Adam Haase:
You just enter your guess. If you’re right you’ll get a nice big tick and move on to the next question automatically, and if you’re wrong you’ll get a question mark. I thought a big red X might be a bit too unfriendly.
Thanks again everyone!
theo
21/21
The last one is the best one.
18/21 woo!
Was surprised at how helpful the colours were, though it made me realise I still think of the old Nintendo and Yahoo logos - had to remind myself they’d changed.
@dglassdes Those typographic puzzles are awesome, think I got them all, are the answers anywhere?
Ouch only 15/21. Little disappointed in myself on some of the last ones… which I now know. I cracked under pressure! Answers would be very helpful.
I wasted a lot of time because I couldn’t spell Caterpillar.
16/21. It seems pretty pointless offering up the chance to try again. Makes a mockery of the high score table. Do you really think someone could get all of these correct in just a shade over a minute?
really fun game to play, especially if you’re a big fan of branding!
some of the clues were cryptic, but amazingly obvious, whereas some were just cryptic!
19/21. Not bad, but I can’t believe I didn’t get the first one. duh.
Fun quiz!
Missed a couple, but enjoyed the quiz.
@tim7168 I don’t think the answers were ever posted. I did find this book mentioned on design observer, though:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0061826596/designobserver-20/
More of the same puzzles, and possibly the answers…
how the heck do you start the game? there’s no way to submit my answers or move on to the next one.
Very fun quiz, had trouble with a few but altogether worth a little perusal.
tim7168:
Highlight for answers to typographic riddles:
1. Out of the question.
2. Blood is thicker than water.
3. Cross-eyed.
4. Beat around the bush.
5. All hands on deck.
6. Safety in numbers.
7. More often than not.
8. On thin ice.
@ Theo
Thanks for addressing that. I was totally stoked to have done so well (since I’m not in the design or advertising field, like so many of this blog’s followers are). I wanna see my name on that hi-score board, man! I still can’t believe I got #21. I typed it in like, “no way it’s this, but it won’t hurt to try” and then it gave me a check mark! Woo!
Im so confused on the last one. Where does the cyan and magenta colors play in to the solution? Im sure there is an obvious answer to that, but darn it for the life of me, I cant understand.
Thanks!
Hi Aliea
The clue for the last question shows certain airport destination codes on the left and certain dates on the right.
BCN MCMXCII
JAO MCMXCVI
BWU MM
ATH MMIV
PEK MMVIII
So you have to identify the next in the sequence.
I wanted the last one to be a tough one :)
theo
Wow, I really bombed that one…yikes. Too embarrassed to even say my score! = )
SO fun though! Thanks for sharing!
Interesting note-
Type the company’s name- VYRE- into any of the fields. It’s a good, self-aware laugh.
21/21. I still missed the last one and “mind the brand.” Anyone have a clue?
@Dave - How on earth did you find that out? Very sweet though.
@blowfly- Beginner’s luck.
@Karan
You wouldn’t want us to cheat, would you? :P
Anymore logo quizzes on the web to fill in?
I managed to get 20 the first time, missing Cadbury, but then again I’m from the US and not particularly fond of chocolate.
Pulling out all of the stops, I couldn’t get them any faster than 33 seconds. The website is too slow for me to go any faster. I just don’t see how anyone’s gotten it down to 25 seconds.
Hello! i got 19\21 - missed “aka motion picture event og the year” and “painful rental?”
please! email me and tell what brands did i miss?
8/21 but my english is not very good!
really fun!
