About a year into attending Pilgrim Church in New Jersey, its staff approached Jung Kwon upon discovering he was a graphic designer. Their 32-page newsletter needed to be redesigned, and they needed help. Kwon not only accepted, but took the opportunity to challenge the information being distributed via the newsletter and how people were going about acquiring it. The resulting insight was not enlightening, as congregates were not reading the saddle-stiched pages put forth by the church, and a new presentation was sought.
I immediately thought converting them into a publication with more storytelling about the christian community and its missions would reach a broader audience, thus making the publication more successful. Every issue has an overarching theme: Volume 1, Togetherness; Volume 2, Spirituality; Volume 3, Education; and Volume 4, Mission—I seek to design every issue with its own personality, yet keeping it real, fun, vibrant, and informative.
Not only does the publication feel substantial upon its first impression, it surely feels more like an interesting magazine than a factual (and perhaps stale) newsletter. It would be interesting to hear what the various generations within the church have to say about this daring approach, one that will hopefully reenergize not only the items on paper, but its readers as they participate within the congregation and what it has to offer the community.
