Lead Image

Silkscreened right here in Austin, Texas, this calendar by designer Matt Uminski strips away everything but numbers. Sundays are printed in white to keep track of time with minimal style, creating an abstract pattern the eye can’t help but try to decipher.

Project Description

Sunday, the first day of the week for most, has been set aside as a day of rest, as “day of the sun” since ancient Egyptian times.  It is a day of revitalization and reflection that marks the advent of a new cycle, a new week.

The design for this years calendar was based around simplicity and order. By striping away all text indicating day of the week and month the calendar design is left bare and muted.  Every day is portrayed with the same value and simplicity, resulting in a monotony of numbers.  Order was found through the introduction of hierarchy which highlights the start of each new cycle, the "day of the sun" or Sunday.

Production Lesson(s)

The biggest challenge was finding the right tone of grey. The grey had to work with the white without being too dull or over powering at the same time.”
