New Logo and Identity for The Clydeside Distillery by Manual

About

(Est. 2017) “The Clydeside Distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery and visitor experience in the heart of Glasgow. Whisky runs through the city’s industrial heritage like the Clyde itself. Which is why our gleaming new Scotch Whisky Distillery at the Queen’s Dock has a touch of the inevitable about it. From here at the Pump House, the heart of Clydeside today, Customs & Excise kept a watchful eye on exports of liquid gold. Turns out, our ancestor, John Morrison, built this very Dock in 1836 while he was busy building half the city. One whole generation before our family discovered whisky. John also had a hand in raising Loch Katrine, whose pure soft water goes into making Clydeside Single Malt Whisky today.”

Relevant quote
After multiple site visits and immersive research into the history of the River Clyde and the city of Glasgow, we developed a creative strategy linking the past with the present that helped tell the story of the relationship between whisky and the history of the site. The brand identity and experience we built references the shipping industry and strikes a careful balance between the dichotomies of history and modernity, and industrial and elegant design. At the core of the identity is the Clydeside type family, a custom designed headline font a used through all brand touch-points and communications, that creates an instantly recognizable and distinct voice for the brand. The typeface is backed by a monogram and palette of color-split combinations, a design influenced by the markings and colors of ship hulls.

Opinion

There isn’t much to say about this. Mostly because everything is so well researched, so well done, and so well suited to the client. The inline aesthetic that drives the identity looks great and it manages to look both as something that has looked like that for 100 years but also as something completely contemporary. The label personalization station is a great idea and the whole set-up looks like a ritual is about to take place, elevating the whole experience. Overall, yeah, this is great.
