(Est. 2002) “Mozilla Firefox (or simply Firefox) is a free and open-source web browser developed by the Mozilla Foundation and its subsidiary the Mozilla Corporation. Firefox is available for Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems, with its Firefox for Android available for Android (formerly Firefox for mobile, it also ran on the discontinued Firefox OS), and uses the Gecko layout engine to render web pages, which implements current and anticipated web standards. As of June 2017, Firefox has between 5.65% and 14% of worldwide usage as a “desktop” browser, making it the second most popular web browser.” (Wikipedia)

Firefox 57 marks the launch of a new product identity system that reflects the Photon design vision. The first elements available in this system are the app icons for Firefox browsers and other Firefox-branded products. These retain familiar elements of past app icons (like the fox and globe) but signal the profound changes in the product with bold colors and simplified shapes from the Photon Design System.

As one of the most recognizable browser logos, Firefox now has the opportunity to ease up on the amount of details in it, which is good, because their old logo told the story of Pangaea to modern times. The new logo is a great, graphic update that adds vibrancy and depth while being more simple. I hadn’t realized how muted the old logo was in colors, until I saw it next to this much more colorful upgrade. I also love the changes to the fox’s tail that make it more like a flame and how it shoots above the globe. The wordmark is also a good refinement. As a bonus, the logo can change skins for different Firefox spin-offs; they are all quite interesting and they open up the possibility of some cool graphic renditions for either products or merchandise. Overall, a lovely update that signals an evolution but clearly indicates it’s the same Firefox users love.

Thanks to Nicolas for the tip.
