Manuel is not just a fashion designer; he is a costumer and an artist. Known as the Tailor to the Stars, his glittering custom garments have been worn by presidents, musicians, artists, athletes, and movie stars. Manuel was born in Michoacan, Mexico and at just seven years old learned how to sew and by twelve was making prom dresses for the ladies in his community. In the early 1950s Manuel moved to Los Angeles to try his trade. He was afforded many opportunities in California through working with famed movie costume designer Edith Head, Sy Devore who tailored for The Rat Pack, and eventually becoming the head designer for Nudie Cohn of the famed "Nudie Suits." By 1978 Manuel decided to branch off on his own and opened his own custom clothing shop and studio by the name of Manuel American Designs or known more simply as "Manuel" where he continued crafting his original designs for the likes of Johnny Cash, Elton John, Marty Stuart, The Rolling Stones, Emmylou Harris, Porter Wagoner and just about everyone else. In the late 1980s Manuel decided to move his studio and his young family to Nashville, TN where he opened his shop in Midtown near Music Row where he continued to design for his famous clientele. Manuel has spent the last 30 years in Nashville where he continues to create his original designs in his studio everyday which is now located in downtown Nashville. His showroom features his glittering designs to be purchased off the rack or to gain inspiration for a custom garment. Through sweet serendipity Manuel has lived a life truly as unique as his designs – custom fit for him and full of life and fun.
