Original logo : Palette de bine

Letterpress: L'abricot

Montreal based multidisciplinary studio L’abricot designed and letterpressed this tactile, kraft paper packaging for handmade, bean-to-bar chocolatier Palette de bine. From the linocut made from the existing logo to the care with which the woodgrain texture was executed, each aspect of the printing process reflects the artisanal nature of the product.

Project Description

This is a packaging for bean-to-bar chocolate bars, made by hand in Mont-Tremblant (Quebec). To reflect the artisanal work involved in the production of the bars, we chose to print the front of each packaging on a letterpress, in order to feel the texture of the print (the back + inside were printed in offset). To accentuate the artisanal feeling, we did a linocut with the existing logo.

On the inside of all the packages, there's an image of a piece of wood in a contrasting color. The original piece of wood was taken on the owner of Palette de bine's property and was first printed directly on a Vandercook letterpress, in order to keep the original grain and texture of the material. The resulting print was then scanned and add on the interior of the packages.

The different packages are identified with a set of stamps, remembering those used in a passeport, indicating the country of origin of the different types of beans used in the process. Finally, we chose a concrete coloured kraft paper, completed with a warm brown ink color.

Production Lesson(s)

The main challenge was the quantities: printing 9,000 packagings on a manual-feeding Chandler and Price letterpress in a short amount of time was hard! The trick was to print as many packages as possible in one session, in order to minimize the maintenance of the press. ”
