Gaming Logo on Demand

OnLive Logo, New

OnLive is a recently launched service providing games on demand. A vast selection of titles for rent or purchase, game trials, multiplayer capabilities, PC and Mac compatible — all instantly accessible through a broadband connection. I just saw this over at the Game Developers Conference and its a pretty cool prospect for avid gamers that may pose a potential impact to the console wars. While their identity may employ all the cliches one might expect — techy typography, a play symbol, dimensional circle with gradient shading and an animated light reflection — the overall feeling is appropriate and the limited black and gold color scheme feels cohesive (and not too much like the palette of Donald Trump’s bathroom!). Imagining the audience that Onlive has in mind, this is a successful, though slightly overplayed, visual approach. Images for the console and controller can be seen here

Joseph Maguire’s comment is:

For a brand it seems quite restrained right, it's also a really sophisticated symbol if it hasn't been done before in that exact form kudos to them. It looks similar to a lot of brands that I've seen done in the past year. But all that aside I can't wait to get my hands on this device and hook it up to my mac.

This is very nice. It's just right for the audience, context and application and is very well executed. Simple and memorable. Great color choice.

Rommel Miraflores’s comment is:

Very nice. It looks like the same style as the Rogers logo (www.rogers.com)

The logo is stylized the same way when they apply the graphic to their installation trucks and other marketing material.

Amanda B’s comment is:

I loooooooooooove the colour scheme. That could just be cause I'm crazy for anything orangey...

I like the whole thing though, I think all the design elements fit together well and are attractive and well suited for the video game market. It might be techy, but it does so without going over the top.

Adam’s comment is:

I'm a gamer, and I have to say, they've slapped a pretty slick brand image on this thing. They demo'ed the platform OS at the GDC and even it is designed to match this look. They're running a tight ship there, which is real important when launching something like this, especially in the cutthroat video game industry.

The typography for OnLive looks eerily similar to Live Nation though:

Rodrigo: After a second look, I realize I was mainly referencing the 'V' and the 'N'

The 'O' and 'E' are obviously completely different.

Not saying they were the same...just similar

Adam: sorry, looked again and now I understood what you said! haha.

anyway, it's a well executed logo, and it's not one of those extra photoshoped gaming logos people are used to see around. my props for this one!

jRod’s comment is:

i like the subtlety of the play symbol inside the circle, and the orange and black work well in the gaming community, but i tell ya, the website needs more complimentary colors. it’s a long way from being finished.

maybe throw in a splash of frog green or schoolbus yellow. just a thought...

awesomerobot’s comment is:

I think the integration of the play symbol here is somewhat fresh, and the use of a Möbius strip (or at least something close to one) is nice and integrates with the whole idea nicely.

Mark’s comment is:

nice, I like it.

It's very appropriate for the type of media it's in and it's not overly flashy, good to see some restraint employed in a logo design.

gold and black good color combination. A+

Leland Witter’s comment is:

Doesn't look gold to me - I would say:

A copper ribbon in a continuous mobius shape signifying infinite electronic game playing connections

Hmm, it seems my inane BS generator has been set to "spew"

I like the look and overall appeal, though I don't immediately get "game" when I see the logo. The more I look at it, the more I think of chocolate, lol.

João Gomes’s comment is:

awesomerobot and Leland beat me to it: The idea of associating a Möbius strip with a "play" symbol fits very well with the overall concept of on-demand gaming.

Basically, from what I understood by taking a quick glance at their website, OnLive aims to feed you with games anytime and anywhere, hence the appropriateness of a symbol associated with infinity, 'amirite'? ;)

JZ’s comment is:

I have to say the Onlive logo is quite identical to Aramora's logo, both of them are obviously inspired by the hackneyed Mobius Strip.

Speaking of the typography, I don't like the lettering.I wonder if there's real fad that some people intentionally mix uppercase and lowercase to show a unique "techness". Probably, FF Flan even works much better for the new logo.

Overall, this logo is appealing to game community members, but not me.

sir’s comment is:

@JZ - the three bends in the logo might be the same but that's about it. It's like saying two signs are the same because they are both "text only". I could also complain the aramova logo is almost replica of the "Recycle" logo.

i saw this logo and immediately wanted it to have my babies.

Not unique, although appropriate. It's not a awesome logo, but it will work very well.

Actually I'm impressed that they held back on the colors... neon green anyone?

Looks like they are going after a slightly more mature, discriminating audience. This brand doesn't looks "too young" or "too hip" to me. No radioactivity!

Harper’s comment is:

I feel like this logo is trying too hard. Compare this to the Wii logo which just looks relaxed and comfortable.

In terms of execution this logo is phenomenal but I feel like the phoned it in on the actual concept.

Vladimir Mijatovic’s comment is:

When I saw onlive logo I instantly thought of Aramova as well, but again, maybe I am too subjective because I designed Aramova logo. Aramova was created on 2004 and it was inspired with Möbius strip. I am not going to say it was the first or the only Möbius-logo, but its shape, execution and colors are what makes it unique. Same with onlive logo - well designed and well executed, with appropriate play symbol within. The only thing is that maybe Möbius-type logos were a bit overused in past few years.

What I like - the way that the ribbon creates a triangle similar to a play button with it's interior. What I'm surprised that no one has compared it to - X-Box Live. First thing that popped into my head.

They are trying to be different, so calling itself "OnLive" (vs "Xbox Live") seems really idiotic.
