IMAGES HAVE BEEN PROVIDED BY THE DESIGNER

A limited amount of letter-pressed postcards further extended the branding effort for a lecture series hosted by AIGA Philadelphia, seeking to encourage attendance amongst its members. Those lucky ones who received one must still be clutching and touching the fancy card. And, yes, that's some more of Jessica Hische's lovely lettering.

Kári Emil’s comment is:

Beautiful! Is the production cost really less than a dollar for each? I would have thought letterpress printing costed more. I'm paying way more for inkjet printing in my school.

Ricky’s comment is:

Kári, these were printed at The Arm, which is a studio in Brooklyn where you can rent letterpress machines by the hour. So it's much cheaper to DIY. What I'm curious about is how you letterpress such a heavy coverage? Does it still make an impression on the paper?

FPO should be re-named FLO: For Letterpress Only

Actually, I really love letterpress, as most designers who work in print do...but it would be nice to see some actual client work, less design for designers / self promo stuff.

Great design is great design, regardless of who did it. We see it, we like it, we post it.

> FPO should be re-named FLO: For Letterpress Only

So far, five out of eleven posts have been letterpress. No worries, it won't all be letterpress.

> but it would be nice to see some actual client work, less design for designers / self promo stuff.

The AIGA is a client. The fact that their audience are designers does not minimize their role as a client that is providing direction, feedback and the budget to get the thing printed and mailed. And other than Jessica's business cards and House Industries' book, all the rest of the work has been client driven. (And even then, the mettle needed to do self-driven and self-funded work is as hard as client-driven work; if you've never done it you will assume it's easy)

Just sayin': Less generalizin'.

This is fabulous. I am actually working on a project about postcards for an info design class.

Check it out at www.onepostcard.com. Things are still very loose, but this site is really just to collect data.

mepc’s comment is:

Postcards seem a very good idea for direct mail promotions.
When done right, as New to You shows, they can be really tastefully designed and printed. Quality matt card will really stand out from the masses of junk printed.

Dan’s comment is:

@mepc

yes postcards can be great direct mail promotions... However nobody seems to point out how beat they are by the time they make it through the mail system.
