Sophie Gallo took a long, sweet time in deciding exactly how to go about designing and producing her business cards. Early on she set three basic parameters to guide her:
1. They had to be on the CHEAP,
2. she wanted to use a multitude of different techniques by hand, and
3. the final product would have to be so beautiful that no one would ever want to throw it away.
She started out by silkscreening the first side, followed by two passes in the miniature letterpress she got for one hundred bucks. First yellow, then inkless. After cutting them she set out to print her info on them but, unhappy with the plate, she ditched it in favor of her Gocco, and that turned out much better. To finish it all, she hand painted the edges of each card in a contrasting color.
Here is what she had to say:
I learned that trial and error, although frustrating, is your best friend. If I hadn’t tried so many techniques I would have piles of half finished cards everywhere.
